Straight Talk After Three Years

Submitted by Dave Won. on

This is a follow-up to my article Straight Talk unlimited service after one year still going strong I thought I would give readers an update on how I feel about the service now after being a loyal customer for the duration of the brand so far.

Firstly, I have to say personally Straight Talk has saved me a lot of money over the last three years, but it hasn’t been all easy sailings with a period of time where I had issues with customer service fixing an issue I was experiencing.

I started out with the Samsung R451C which at the time was just a really cool phone to have on an unlimited plan especially using the Verizon network that gave amazing coverage on travels around the US. This phone was strong a sturdy and never failed. The data connection to the Internet was slow, but at the time it was acceptable because there weren’t a lot of other plans that were around this price.

Until the Nokia, E71 was released on Straight Talk, I was still quite happy to use the Samsung R451C, but getting a 3G connection was a huge incentive to go for either the Nokia E71 or 6790. So I went with the Nokia E71 because I wanted wifi. I think this was the turning point for the service because so called “unlimited 3G” was still very rare on contracts and prepaid alike.

I am amazed at how many phones have come out in the past three years under the Walmart/Tracfone co-op. The Wontek Straight Talk Reviews page is just covered with phone models. When I wrote the first review, there was less than a hand full of phones to choose from.

My biggest nag about Straight Talk was when I had technical problems cause by call center staff making changes to my account, anyone who has experienced technical problems with account's details being changed will know exactly what I am talking about. So at the time getting help was very hard, and wasn’t resolved until finally Tracfone corporate acknowledged the problem and fix these issues.

The problems aside I have had good service for over a year or so now with the E71 and changing over to the BYO sim program and using the sim card in an unlocked Samsung Exhibit II. All in all, I have been able to save a lot of money, and it has been worth it. I still think Straight Talk is a great option for anyone who wants to save money, and not be bound to nasty contracts.
