Destroyed company Megavideo/Megauploads founded by German born Kim Dotcom (Kim Schmitz) has been given a new lease of life this week after it was announced that Kim Dotcom and investors have launched a new company offering file sharing.
Primarily based in New Zealand, the website will be protected to some degree from the likes of the US Govt. that was highly criticized for its military style of attacking and shutting down the original company. Plus it will stop a repeat of the US Govt. invasion of the Dotcom family’s residence in New Zealand, driven by Hollywood’s piracy claims.
A lot people are pretty mad the way things went down with Megavideo, and yes there was a lot of stuff shared by people that wasn’t legal, but honestly it’s hard to police… look at Youtube for example, loaded with piracy! I don’t see the Government doing a takedown of Google’s Youtube servers and offices, or GrooveShark that is selling access to pirated music. Imagine an invasion of the CEO of Google’s house by the German Govt or the New Zealand Govt? Sounds crazy right?
Dotcom’s new company is launching from the new address http://www.mega.co.nz using the NZ top level domain name, which hopefully will protect the company from Hollywood/Tax payer funded attacks on the company.
Provided the New Zealand government stands by him this time (unlike doing the ground work for the Dotcom home invasion earlier this year) there is no reason that a visionary like Dotcom can’t pull off another successful business.
Hopefully this time knowing US government is capable interfering with international company affairs, there is enough knowledge to defend Mega legally. Then the company that once flourished for over half a decade can rise once again.
Maybe Kim should change his name to Kim DotCoNZ?
