There has been a lot of complaining and moaning by people in the mobile industry trying to create news stories about Android Fragmentation. Now before I continue, the Fragmentation they refer to isn’t about Hard disk file structure and block allocation, which was a massive problem with the FAT file system on Windows OS.
What Android Fragmentation is referring to is the growing list of Android distributions by different manufacturers. This apparently has tabloid tech news reporters on the CBS range of sites worried, but no one else seems to give a crap.
Admittedly there can be issues with operating system being locked down by manufacturer’s distributions of Android, but for the average user this should pose as major issue.
I don’t know why people even bother worrying about the amount distributions anyway. From an apps point of view, they still run really well the majority devices even if the buttons or screen sizes differ; developers update their applications to be ready for devices when they hit the market.
If the consumer were to get all worried about these Android Fragmentation issues that are reported, their only choice would be to go for the likes Apple products where you need to purchase an overpriced and locked down phone, and people don’t want this either.
The biggest problem that I see is the fact, there are not enough security updates on manufactures distributions, and they installed heaps of crappy apps that are only in the provider’s interests.
Imagine if every provider had to submit their drivers, custom apps, logos, etc. to Google to get them to put them in a universal distribution, what a joke.
